Mid-Season Fantasy Football Mock Draft

Published: 10/25/2007 5:28 pm by Smitty in Fantasy Articles

Smitty I know what you’re thinking… a mock draft in the middle of Week 8? Well, nothing brings out your true fantasy beliefs better than a mid-season fantasy football mock draft. What I mean is this… As fantasy owners watch the young stars rise, the unknowns flourish and some of the top dogs fall, one’s personal rankings are often a mess come mid-season. At this point in the year, fantasy owners are sometimes holding onto their stubborn strategies or cloudy ways of thinking — fantasy owners are just not being honest with themselves when trying to regroup for the rest of the season. Well, a random (unrelated to your league) mock draft is just what the doctor ordered! Here is a Four Round Fantasy Football Mock Draft (Mid-Season Style) involving 6 FFX contributors / writers. I decided to have each contributor take up two spots and provide commentary on why they selected each pick for that draft spot. Be sure to Visit The Official Thread For This Mock Here. Enjoy.

Round One

Round 1
Commentary
1.01 - LaDainian Tomlinson RB1
Ballgame: If drafting today, no way I pass up on Tomlinson. He should be the best back in football from here on out.
1.02 - Adrian Peterson RB2
Ballgame: I know this is early for a rookie who could hit a rookie wall, but he is the clear #2 with Ronnie Brown now out for the year. Even without any of his previous points, I draft A.P. #2 overall if creating a league for just Weeks 8-16.
1.03 - Frank Gore RB3
Smitty: The three spot is tough because FWP, LJ, Gore and Westy all seem really close in value from this point looking forward. Despite his current ankle injury, I roll with Gore.
1.04 - Brian Westbrook RB4
Smitty: Again, this is a tough position to be in, but Westbrook seems like the only other player besides Gore that can get you those 2-3TD games. Westy feels like money at #4.
1.05 - Tom Brady QB1
Matt: I’m normally not a fan of taking a quarterback in the first round, but how can you not invest your first in Brady? I am not sure he will stay on his 61TD pace, but I think he could easily reach 49-50.
1.06 - Randy Moss WR1
Matt: With this spot, I’d have no problem drafting Randy Moss. Moss is as good as any player in the league right now aside from Brady and just having him on your roster gives you a chance to win on a weekly basis.
1.07 - Willie Parker RB5
Yarx: I honestly would have taken either Tom Brady or Randy Moss if they had dropped. FWP is the safest pick at this point and he really could have gone in the top 5.
1.08 - Steven Jackson RB6
Yarx: Number eight is a hard slot to draft in, because now you get into that range of risky running backs. Still, I have no problem taking Jackson given he is expect to be back in action in Week 8. He may not be a top 1-2 guy right away, but I think he can get back to 100/1 very soon.
1.09 - Joseph Addai RB7
Tavaner: A plug and play RB ~ with Indy fighting for home field advantage he’ll be there late in the season. Love Addai even with Keith.
1.10 - Larry Johnson RB8
Tavaner: He’ll carry a team to the playoffs with his remaining schedule. Welcome back L.J.!!!
1.11 - Peyton Manning QB2
Craphonso: I was hoping I could grab Addai here with the job share news of Keith, but Tav grabbed him ahead of me. I like the Colts and think the offense is going to roll the second half of the season.
1.12 - Reggie Bush RB9 Craphonso: The Saints are just getting warmed up and have a nice looking schedule against run stopping defenses.

Round Two

Player
Commentary
2.01 - Reggie Wayne WR2
Craphonso: Wayne as the #2 WR? yeah I’ll take the plunge. He is my pick as the WR to score the most points in the second half of the season.
2.02 - Willis McGahee RB10
Craphonso: Very tough call here for me, I strongly considered going WR, but in the end McGahee has been consistant running the ball so far and I think his TDs will start to follow with his yardage.
2.03 - Marion Barber RB11
Tavaner: A lot of options, this guy is a stud even in a RBBC. He’ll continue to produce as DAL goes for home field during the playoffs.
2.04 - T.J. Houshmandzadeh WR3
Tavaner: Almost 20 more targets than Chad Johnson; 15 more than Terrell Owens; and high productivity with 8 TDs.
2.05 - Steve Smith WR4
Yarx: I realize a few WRs are outperforming Smith right now, but if drafting today, I feel very comfortable taking Smith right after Moss. With the RBs left, I feel WR is the safest position to invest in right here.
2.06 - Terrell Owens WR5
Yarx: T.O. is a stud, plain and simple. Randy Moss is the only other WR I’d rather have from Weeks 8-16. Simple choice for me.
2.07 - Brandon Jacobs RB12
Matt: Jacobs is good for 100 and a touchdown in each game that he starts and finishes. He is probably too big to stay healthy, so I’d need to snag D. Ward later in this draft, but Jacobs is easily the best RB option available in my opinion.
2.08 - Travis Henry RB13
Matt: This is a bit risky at this point in the draft given that Henry could be facing a possible suspension, but this would be something I’d do if drafting today looking forward. Why? Well, I’d lock up Selvin Young and Andre Hall and I’d have myself top 10RB talent. Landing Selvin Young before another owner drafts him is a bit risky, but given how well that combo will do, it is worth the risk.
2.09 - Chad Johnson WR6
Smitty: I feel that Carson Palmer and the Bengals will explode in the second-half of the fantasy season, especially with Chris Henry coming back in a few weeks. I think Chad is going to play like a top 3-4WR from this point forward, so if you have him, hold onto him!
2.10 - Carson Palmer QB3
Smitty: As I just said above, I expect big things out of that Cincy offense from Weeks 8-16. I considered Romo here, but I just feel like Palmer will blow up soon.
2.11 - LaMont Jordan RB14
Ballgame: Jordan is an exciting running back and he was going nuts in the beginning of the season. His back injury appears to be healing, as he is no longer on the injury report. Jordan is a great gamble here because he could extremely outperform this draft slot. Extremely!
2.12 - Clinton Portis RB15 Ballgame: His health always worries me, but he is getting the job done. He may not be getting the yards that fantasy owners are hoping for, but the limited carries are at least keeping him relatively healthy. Expect him to keep finding the end zone in the second-half of the season.

Round Three

Player
Commentary
3.01 - Laurence Maroney RB16
Ballgame: If fantasy owners think that New England’s passing game will get figured out, they are fooling themselves, but I do believe that the Patriots will run a bit more now that Maroney isn’t even on the team’s injury report. Maroney will be a solid RB2 in this second-half of fantasy football.
3.02 - Shaun Alexander RB17
Ballgame: I’m as worried about Alexander as all of you, but this is the third round. It is time to gamble and he feels like a pretty decent gamble at this stage in the mock if you ask me.
3.03 - Marshawn Lynch RB18
Smitty: I will admit, I was not very high on Lynch in the off-season. I liked his long-term value and his skill-set, but Buffalo’s offense worried me and rightfully so. That said, it is Lynch time! I expect this kid to breakout from this point moving forward - He may just become an excellent RB2 option within a game or two. Go get him while his value is relatively low!
3.04 - Plaxico Burress WR7
Smitty: Burress is playing like a beast. I worry about his health, especially since he doesn’t even consider practicing these days, but because he produces… easy pick.
3.05 - Roy Williams WR8
Matt: Kitna and the Lions sure are dropping off, but I do think they will rebound in the second-half of the season. Kitna and Roy both are players I’m trying to trade for from this point looking forward. Both are cheaper now to get via trade than they really should be.
3.06 - Maurice Jones-Drew RB19
Matt: Jones-Drew has the talent, but when will they give this guy even 80% of the carries? Even in a complete sharing situation he is worth this pick, but he is capable of so much more.
3.07 - Tony Romo QB4
Yarx: Wow, how can you not like this value? Romo is capable of finishing as the 2nd best fantasy QB this year and I think he will play well down the stretch. He isn’t as good as Brady, but he is second best on my set of rankings.
3.08 - Marvin Harrison WR9
Yarx: While I worry that we won’t ever see that Harrison of old, at this point I think I’d be willing to take that risk. From Week 8 on, I believe we will see a healthier Harrison and a productive top 10WR per start from here on out.
3.09 - Braylon Edwards WR10
Tavaner: Moving into the upper echelon of WRs and his schedule during fantasy playoffs is sweet!
3.10 - Anquan Boldin WR11
Tavaner: Another stud that’ll produce all the way through fantasy playoffs.
3.11 - Edgerrin James RB20
Craphonso: He has been reborn this year with the new offense in ARI.
3.12 - Kevin Jones RB21 Craphonso: He very well could be a top 10 RB for the rest of the year. He has scored in 3 of his last 4.

Round Four

Player
Commentary
4.01 - Antonio Gates TE1
Craphonso: He has not disappointed so far and will continue to produce.
4.02 - Larry Fitzgerald WR12
Craphonso: I would have been happy with Fitz or Boldin and Tav made the choice for me.
4.03 - Derek Anderson QB5
Tavaner: That’s right QB5. He’s produced and with his schedule he won’t slow down, 14 TDs and counting.
4.04 - Eli Manning QB6
Tavaner: This guy gets better each week, 13 TDs with 2 in each of the last three weeks.
4.05 - Jesse Chatman RB22
Yarx: While I don’t expect Ronnie Brown type numbers, I can’t imagine that they will use Chatman much less than they used Brown. He could be a top 12-15RB with ease if he sees the touches I think that he will see.
4.06 - Cedric Benson RB23
Yarx: This guy has the talent, but he just doesn’t seem to know how to put it all together. Benson is worth a mid-4th round pick, but he may just disappoint. I would be sure to grab back-up Adrian Peterson if this draft extended into the middle rounds.
4.07 - Torry Holt WR13
Matt: I’ll take Holt in the later half of the 4th round. He has some health issues, and the Rams look awful, but Jackson is back this week and that should help Holt and Bulger out a lot. Holt has great value right now and this draft is exposing that. Go get him if he is treated like this in your league!
4.08 - Thomas Jones RB24
Matt: Who knows what to expect from Thomas Jones right now, but the RBs are getting slim. I’m not excited about this pick, but he is the best available. RBs are slim this year.
4.09 - Donald Driver WR14
Smitty: Driver is consistent and I believe the Pack will continue to have success on all levels. Driver will do what he does every year… quietly finish with the best of ‘em, so this is great value. He is a guy to obviously trade for, as he isn’t getting the respect that he deserves right now. Don’t give up a lot, just test the waters and acquire him if the price is right.
4.10 - Wes Welker WR15
Smitty: Welker is easily worth a 4th round pick. Easily! Does he have a ton of future value? Well, I’m not too sure about that, but fantasy owners need to go with the flow right now and recognize patters. The Brady to Welker pattern isn’t going away this year, so observe, react and adjust. Welker is top 10WR material from Weeks 8-16.
4.11 - Rudi Johnson RB25
Ballgame: This is a total gamble, but if this were a real draft, I’d lock down this reach by snagging Kenny Watson in a round or two. Together these backs would be a nice combo to rotate. Rudi could still bounce-back and he is worth this kind of value given what RBs are left.
4.12 - Donavan McNabb QB7 Ballgame: McNabb has started off slow, but I think he just may step it up a notch in the final 9 Weeks of the fantasy season. If you are hurting at QB, consider trying to acquire McNabb. If he is a back-up for another fantasy owner, you may get away with stealing him away using a WR3.
